Coker Drum Replacement

Port Arthur, TX

  • 148,000 Man Hours
  • Completed On Schedule
  • Completed On Budget

Project Overview

This project consisted of installing reinforcing steel during the pre/turnaround to allow the top deck and drill towers to be separated from the main structure. During the shutdown with the existing drums exposed we removed the drums and replaced with new larger drums. The lifted weight for the deck and towers along with the rigging was just over 1500 tons with the new drums weighing just under 500 tons.

Also included in the work was the removal of the existing Delta valves for shipment to repair shops in Houston and New Orleans. Once the new drums were installed the Delta valves were installed on the new drums. The coke chutes were also repaired with new steel plate. ALE provided the crane used for the project and the SK-90 was in the USA for the first time. The SK-90 was erected onsite and took approximately 10 weeks to build with a capacity of 4300 metric tons. The project was completed on time and budget with a total of 148,000 man-hours over a 13 month time period.
